The Centre for Islam and Global Challenge (CIGC) at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) successfully hosted a two-day international conference on November 7 and 8, 2023. The conference, titled “Fiqh and Justice in an ‘Abnormal’ Context: Connecting Islamic Tradition to Contemporary Challenges,” aimed to delve into the issues of justice and Islamic law and ethics in the modern era, seeking connections with the Islamic tradition (turath).
The event attracted 18 distinguished speakers from renowned institutions worldwide, including UCSB, University of Gottingen, University of Hamburg, Hamad bin Khalifa University, SOAS UoL, University of Cambridge, University of Toledo, among others. These experts presented papers on various topics related to the conference theme: Justice and Fiqh.
Divided into six sessions, each focused on a specific issue related to the general conference theme and the expertise of the speakers, the conference provided a comprehensive exploration of the intersection of justice and Islamic law. UIII faculty members moderated the sessions, ensuring a nuanced and scholarly discussion, followed by engaging Q&A sessions with the diverse audience.
With over 300 participants, including academics, students, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers, the conference provided a vibrant platform for intellectual exchange and dialogue. The discussions fostered a deeper understanding of the Islamic tradition and its relevance to contemporary challenges.
In a notable development, selected papers from the conference will be considered for post-conference publication in the Journal of Islamic Ethics (JIE) by Brill, managed by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Qatar. The JIE, a peer-reviewed journal covering theoretical, historical, and practical dimensions of Islamic ethics, has agreed to publish the papers in a special issue, which will be indexed by Scopus. The anticipated publication is expected to significantly contribute to the advancement of knowledge and scholarship in the field of Islamic ethics and law.
The success of this international conference reaffirms UIII’s commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding on critical issues within the Islamic tradition, setting a precedent for future academic endeavors in the field.
